Volunteers needed for Aukake Area Games
Special Olympics soccer and bocce teams will be competing in the Aukake Area Games on Saturday at Old Kona Airport Sports Complex fields, next to the pool.
Volunteers are needed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. to support the Kona, Kohala and Hilo teams, as well as ensure the event runs smoothly. In particular, Special Olympics West Hawaii, which is hosting the competition, needs help with painting and chalking the soccer fields; people to serve as linesmen and scorekeepers; help setting up and taking down tents and tables; and food donations.

North Kohala library hosts pre-K story time
The North Kohala Public Library will host preschool story times at 10 a.m. Fridays in August, September and October in Kapaau.
Preschoolers, ages 2 through 5, and their caregivers are invited to join the fun with stories, songs, games and simple crafts.
This story series is particularly appropriate for newcomers to story time. With many of the regular attendees starting kindergarten, the August and September sessions will be small and parents will not need to worry if their child does not sit quietly or remain attentive through the program.

AARP driving course
is Monday, Tuesday
Kona Community School for Adults is sponsoring two AARP Driver Safety Classes at the Kona Palisades Recreation Center located on Kaiminani Drive at the foot of Kona Palisades Subdivision. The one-day, four-hour classes begin at 1 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. These classroom refresher courses will cover topics including defensive driving tactics, dealing with road rage and how to adjust to age-related changes. There are no driving or written tests.
Participants with Hartford Insurance may receive as much as a 10 percent discount on automobile insurance upon completion of the course. Other companies may offer a similar discount.
The course costs $12 for AARP members; $14 for nonmembers. Early registration is recommended.

Hawaii Coffee Association crowns grand champions
The Hawaii Coffee Association crowned the grand champions of Hawaiian coffee during its 17th annual Conference and Trade Show and fourth annual State Cupping Competition held Saturday at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu.
Wood Valley Coffee Co. from Ka‘u received grand champion honors in the commercial category for entries that had at least 300 pounds of the winning coffee available for purchase at the time of entry.
Heavenly Hawaiian Farms from Kona received grand champion honors in the creative category for entries that had less than 300 pounds of the winning coffee available for purchase. The creative category encourages farmers to try new cultivation or processing methods without having to produce a commercial-level quantity of coffee.
Entries were critiqued by a panel of industry professionals using standard blind procedures defined by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Judges assigned a single numerical score to each coffee.
